NHL Free Agency Rip-offs

The top five worst deals from yesterday....
5) Montreal Canadiens sign Brian Gionta for 5 years, 5M avg.
4) Minnesota Wild sign Martin Havlat for 6 years, 5M avg.
3) Montreal Canadiens sign Jaroslav Spacek for 3 years, 3.83M avg.
2) Tampa Bay Lightning sign Mattias Ohlund for 7 years, 3.75M avg.
1) Anaheim Ducks sign Scott Niedermayer for a year at 6M
Honorable mention: Edmonton Oilers sign Nikolai Khabibulin for 4 years, 3.75M avg.
And the best deal goes to the Florida Panthers as they lock up David Booth for 6 years at 4.25M.
Quite surprising, because management there has been nothing but a failure over the years. Ask Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen if you're not up to speed....
Big jobs number on a slow trading day makes for whippy action in the market later, be careful and do the same over the holiday weekend. Be sure to catch those Daytona races on Friday and Saturday nights, as they're some of the most exciting races ever. Have a great weekend.

A Fan of Ownership

It used to be the players I enjoyed watching that determined the teams I cheered for.
Over the years, it has become ownership that I follow.
Dan Snyder is an ass and I've never liked him.
Peter Angelos ruined baseball for me in Baltimore a long time ago.
Now it's Washington Capitals GM George McPhee's turn. After two horrific contract overpayments to washed-up players like Jose Theodore and Michael Nylander, the team has very little cap room to make itself better going into today's free agency frenzy (also known as Christmas Day for many hockey fans). The Caps, who are just a couple players away from contending for the Stanley Cup, are going to rely on two or three guys to get them where they need to go. It hasn't worked and it won't be working. Did I mention that Theo and Nyls will ride the bench more than they play this season? Awful.
Much respect to the Calgary Flames for making a good move to start. We'll see what owners mean business tomorrow (Chicago of last year anyone? I applauded them loudly).
Shockingly enough, I'm more of a Pittsburgh Penguins fan of ownership than most teams.
Aside from the "duh" stars like Hossa, Gaborik, Havlat and the Sedin twins, there are plenty of underrated players left out there. At least I think they're underrated for what they might get paid anyway. Michael Cammalleri comes to mind, as does Chris Neil for under 2 million. Mike Komisarek has always been a favorite of mine too.
Anyway, NHL teams will have their shopping lists ready today, and I'll be taking notes myself to see who wants to make an effort to bring a winner to their city. Can't wait.

The New "GM"
"Government Motors" Brand CarIn a special news conference yesterday, Government Motors announced its new concept car...
The new GM (Government Motors) proudly introduces the 2010 Obama ...This car runs on hot air and broken promises. It has three wheels that speed the vehicle through tight left turns. It comes complete with two Teleprompters programmed to help the occupants talk their way out of any violations.
The transparent canopy reveals the plastic smiles still on the faces of all the "happy" democrat owners.
